Of course Sigmund Freud has more than a significant place in the work of psychotherapy. As the founder of psychoanalysis Freud centred the main of his scientific approach around, amongst various other ideas, the notion of the Unconscious - a 'decentering' of the subject from an all aware and controlling position to the unsettling one of being 'subjected to' something else. An idea taken up later and developed by Jacques Lacan who ultimately claimed that 'the unconscious is structured like a language'.
